What is Net-Zero
and the UMC Net-Zero Commitment?

"Net-Zero" refers to a goal, and serious, sustained efforts toward that goal, of reducing the amount of carbon emitted by everyday operations to the point where an agency, family or organization is contributing so little carbon to the planet's atmosphere that its emissions can be reabsorbed by offsetting natural processes.

Twelve agencies and organizations in the United Methodist Church created the Interagency Just and Equitable Net-Zero Coalition in 2021.

Their commitment goes beyond simple "net-zero" energy goals to include the principle that the way the goals will be achieved will contribute to justice for all people, especially those who have suffered the worst effects of climate change and pollution while contributing the least to them.
